As far as cute coincidences(巧合)go,this surprising photo takes the cake.

Jason Roth, from Miami, Florida and Jessica Roth, from Lakeland, Florida, both 35, met at a club near Florida State University, and eventually fell in love. Both thought that the club was the beginning of their story. They were shocked when they discovered that, though they’re from different towns, they had a picture together from 17 years before they“met”.

The unbelievable discovery happened about a year and a half after they started dating(约会). They had previously known that they happened to have attended the same preschool during a brief period when Jason lived in Lakeland with his aunt—though the pair had no memory of each other as kids. After finding an old photo taken at his preschool, Jason noticed a little girl in a pink skirt looking like his then-girlfriend. He immediately called Jessica to confirm(确认) it , and he was astonished to find out that he was right.

The couple, who started dating during Jason's senior year at FSU, discovered other coincidences in their lives after finding the photograph. “We also discovered that we lived in the same dorm buiding in our first year at college. She used to come down to the cafe I worked in... and order pies from me,” Jason recalled.

About a year after discovering the picture, the couple got engaged(订婚). They even used the photo as their “Save the Date" wedding announcement. Six months after that, on April 9 2005, they got married.

Now the couple have two kids and will celebrate their 10th anniversary next April. Jason says the picture is the proof that they're meant to be a couple. “ I will love her forever, ” said Jason."Life is hard and sometimes our orbits(轨道) get further apart but then they come back together and I couldn't be more grateful to have such a wonderful partner in life.”

Jennifer Lawrence, Taylor Swift and Ivanka Trump—what do they have in common? They are, of course, all Americans. And according to a survey by social networking site badoo.com, they all best illustrate(举例说明) the word “cool”.

But just what does it mean to say someone is “cool”? Most would answer that it is something to do with being independent-minded and not following the crowd.

Yale University art professor Robert Farris Thompson says that the term “cool” goes back to 15th century West African philosophy(哲学). “Cool” was connected with ideas of grace(优雅) under pressure.

“In Africa, ” he writes, “coolness was a positive quality which combines calmness, silence, and life. ”

The modern idea of “cool”developed largely in the US in the period after World War Ⅱ. “Post-war ‘cool’ was in part an expression of war-weariness(厌战情绪). . . it went against the strict social rules of the time, ” write sociologists Dick Pountain and David Robins in Cool Rules:Anatomy of an Attitude.

But it was the American actor James Dean who became the symbol for “cool” in the hugely successful 1955 movie Rebel without a Cause. Dean plays a tough guy who always challenges his parents and the authorities. He always gets the girl, smokes cigarettes, wears a leather jacket and beats up bullies(欺凌弱小者). In the movie, Dean showed what “cool” would mean to American young people .

Today the focus of ”cool” has changed to athletics(体育运动的) stars. Often in movies about schools, students gain popularity on the athletics field more than in the classroom. This can be seen quite clearly in movies like Varsity Blues and John Tucker Must Die.

But many teenagers also think being smart is cool. Chess and other thinking games have been becoming more popular in schools.

“Call it the Harry Potterization of America—a time when being smart is the new cool, ” writes journalist Joe Sunnen.

In Modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity; others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求)of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people , I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that wound mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(化解)can we discover a new meaning in competition.

32.What does this passage mainly talk about?

  A. Competition helps to set up one’s self-respect.

  B. People hold different opinions on competition.

  C. Competition is harmful to one’s development.

  D. Failures are necessary experience in competition.

33.Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?

  A. It pushes society forward. B. It builds up a sense of duty.

  C. It improves personal abilities. D. It encourages individual efforts.

34.What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with “a desire to fail”?

  A. One’s success in competition calls for great efforts.

  B. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills.

  C. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others.

  D. One’s success relies largely on his firm belief of winning.

35.Which point of view may the author agree with?

  A. Competition damages friendship among people.

  B. Performance in competition determines one’s value.

  C. Winning should be a matter of life and death.

  D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

  书面表达

  The Ten-minute Break Between Classes

Time seems to be so limited for us senior high school students. Therefore, with so much work to do, a growing number of students are eager to seize every minute to study, including the ten-minute break. Pitifully, the result isn’t as satisfying as expected.

To tell the truth, we need the short break, of which the significance can’t be overlooked. Short as the break is, we can refresh ourselves and get prepared for the coming class, which can guarantee us a better academic performance in the long run. Furthermore, as is universally acknowledged, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. It is believed that a suitable amount of relaxation contributes to more positive participation in class. In conclusion, there is no need to push ourselves so hard to study during the short break.

As for me, I prefer to walk out of the classroom, breath the fresh air and chat with my classmates during the break. Only in this way can I do my work remarkably well.
