In 1921, long before the Walt Disney Company turned Pooh (维尼熊) into an international star of TV and films, Christopher Robin Milne was given a toy bear on his first birthday from his father, A.A. Milne, who bought the stuffed (填充的) animal from a store. The stuffed animal was named Edward Bear. Years later, Edward was named Winnie. From the time Christopher Robin Milne was a baby until he was about 8 years old, he would receive different stuffed animals.

A.A. Milne was a famous English author. As he watched his son interact (互动) with Winnie and friends, A.A. Milne thought his child’s interaction with the collection of animals would make a great bedtime story. So Milne worked with artist Ernest H. Shepard and wrote the first Winnie the Pooh poem, where Edward Bear was known as “Teddy Bear”. The writings appeared in Punch magazine and in the book they wrote together, When We Were Very Young, which was published in 1924. In a four-year period, three more books that centered on the bear and his team followed: 1926’s Winnie-the-Pooh; 1927’s Now We Are Six; and 1928’s The House at Pooh Corner.

The books and poems about Pooh brought great success to the author, and the characters became favorites with young children and their families around the world. Their popularity led Disney to get the rights to make films about the characters in 1961. Five years later, Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and the rest of the team appeared on screen for the first time in Winnie-the-Pooh and the Honey Tree. The characters later appeared in TV shows, movies, video games and short films. Pooh’s most recent appearance came last year in the popular children’s program, Doc McStuffins, where he was a special guest.

My friend Susan has a huge-hearted husband. He is once again on the front lines of fighting the fires in Northern CA. As a Chief Battalion leader, his job is very dangerous and his time away from his family is often for weeks at a time during “fire season”.

Every time before he leaves, Ethan, Susan and each of the three teens hold one another and thoughtfully each shares the best of their traditions --- each promises to do the tasks that will keep the family a well-oiled machine while Ethan is away.

Ethan has brought back animals that lost their homes in the fires. By now, a gray rabbit, two parrots and a small group of Nubian goats have been added into the family.

When Ethan is on duty, Susan keeps checking her cell phone for Ethan’s text messages. His substantial (大量的) white facial hair is often mistaken for that of Father Christmas by children who are carried out of their burning homes by him.

For each rescued child, a toy bear is waiting to be matched with him/her. For each adult, Ethan provides clean clothes. He finds pleasure in doing his job well. He is grateful to be often on the front line with frightened people and their poor pets.

I am mentioning Ethan because by now the big fire has been spreading widely for a week. It has caused 55 deaths and left 500,000 people homeless. Now I am here at my school site, and the smoky air is keeping our students inside, waiting for rescue.

  8. What is the family’s attitude to Ethan’s work?

Gardening is popular in many parts of the world. This outdoor activity gives us beautiful plants, pleasant smelling flowers and fresh fruits and vegetables. But it also does a lot of good to our health.

Gardening connects people. When you are gardening, you are outdoors. So it is a perfect chance to meet and spend time with your neighbors. Most people love to talk about their hobbies, and gardeners are no different. They usually enjoy showing people what they are growing. And most enjoy sharing advice and stories about their gardens almost as much as sharing flowers and vegetables from their gardens.

Gardening is a great activity for children. It gets them outdoors and off computers, televisions and cell phones. Gardening is also a great teacher. It can teach a child about where food comes from and healthy eating. It also helps them to understand that the natural resources (资源) are not inexhaustible and the importance of using them carefully.

Then, when you garden, you must move around. All the different movements needed for gardening, like bending and lifting, work small muscles (肌肉) in the body. And you can easily get good exercise when you are digging holes or pulling grasses.

In a study, researches looked at more than 2,800 people over the age of 60. They studied their lifestyle habits, activities and health over a 16-year period. They found that gardening could lower the risk of future dementia (痴呆) by 36%. Gardening requires people do many repeated actions, such as picking off dying flowers. These actions have a calming influence on the brain. The brain is still active but not in the same way when we use computers.

You’ll feel wonderful when what you grow in a garden looks, smells, feels and tastes good.

  12. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?

  A. Gardeners don’t feel lonely. B. Gardeners are fond of sharing.

  C. Gardeners have many hobbies. D. Gardeners care about the environment.

  13. What does the underlined word “inexhaustible” in Paragraph 3 mean?

  A. Useless. B. Special. C. Endless. D. Cheap.

  14. What is the study used to show?

  A. Gardening is popular with the old. B. Gardening is good for health.

  C. Gardening can be a tiring activity. D. Gardening is better than playing computers.

  15. What’s the purpose of the text?

  A. To show how to garden. B. To encourage us to garden.
