Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Many people would think of Confucius, whose birthday was September 28. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remember and respect him for his contribution to the education today.

Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only 3. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn’t give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.

Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time only children from noble families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.

Today, people still follow Confucius’ lessons. He told us that we all have something worthy to be learned. “When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I choose their good qualities and follow them.”

He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. “All study but no thinking makes people puzzled (困惑的). All thinking but no study makes people lazy.”

Confucius is not only a great teacher, but also a famous thinker with wise thoughts about the world and society. His most important teachings are about kindness and good manners. “A person should be strict with himself, but be kind to others.” he said.

We're surrounded by chemistry in everyday life. Sometimes it is easy to see, like when your science teacher conducts a big experiment in class. At other times, it can be extremely hard to see everyday chemistry at work, but nearly everything you touch or use has some element(元素) of chemistry in it.

Something as simple as toothpaste contains at least three chemicals, if not more. It is the mixture of them and its chemical reaction that keeps your teeth clean. Other things you use every day are created by chemistry, such as hair products, shampoo and soap. Adding detergent (洗涤剂) to water involves chemistry. Without chemistry, we would never have realized that we need soap to get the oil out of clothes or skin.

Chemistry not only helps us make products for use, but it also helps us understand the world around us. Chemistry helps us understand what the ozone layer (臭氧层) is and how it protects us. Chemistry also gives us sunscreen to protect us from the sun. Thanks to chemistry, we know bleach (漂白剂) can't be mixed with vinegar, because it can produce poisonous gas. Without chemistry, we wouldn't have had fireworks displays on important days like the Spring Festival.

Chemistry plays a big role in food preparation. Cooking food causes it to go through a chemical change. That is why cooked food often tastes different from raw (生的) food. Baking is a great example of chemistry. Too much or too little of any ingredient makes a difference to the result of baking, for example, the dough (面团) won't riseor the cake will be flat.

Chemistry isn't something that just lives in a lab; it's something that you come across hundreds of times every day. If you know how chemistry works, you will have a better understanding of the science behind some of the simplestlooking things.

  29. The following actions are about chemistry EXCEPT ________.

  A. cleaning teeth with toothpaste B. washing hair with hair products

  C. using soap to remove the oil from clothes D. washing your face with water

  30. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

  A. Chemistry Around the House B. Chemistry in Science

  C. Chemistry for Dinner D. Chemistry in everyday life

  31. Which one is TRUE according to Paragraph 4?

  A. One can't find chemistry when cooking food.

  B. Chemistry plays an important part in food making.

  C. That dough rises has nothing to do with chemistry.

  D. A flat cake is the result of too many ingredients.

  D

A survey said the average Asian dad spent one minute a day with his children. I was shocked. I mean, a whole minute? Every day? Get real. Once a week maybe. The fact is, many Asian males are terrible at kid-related things. In fact, I am one of them.

Child-rearing (养育) doesn’t come naturally to guys. My mother knew the names of our teachers, best friends and crushes. My dad was only vaguely aware there were short people sharing the apartment. My mother bought healthy fresh food at the market every day. My dad would only go shopping when there was nothing in the fridge except a jar of butter. Then he’d buy beer. My mother always knew the right questions to ask our teachers. My dad would ask my English teacher if she could get us a discount on school fees. My mother served kid food to kids. My dad added chili sauce to everything, including our baby food.

The truth is, mothers have superpowers. My son fell off a wall once and hurt himself all over. I demanded someone bring me a computer so I could google what to do. My wife ignored me and did some sort of chanting(咏诵) phrase such as“Mummy kiss it better,” and cured 17 separate injuries in less than 15 seconds.

Yes, mothers are incredible people, but they are not always correct. Yet honesty forces me to record the fact that mothers only know best 99.99 percent of the time. Here are some famous slip-ups.

The mother of Bill Gates:“If you’re going to drop out of college and hang out with your stupid friends, don’t come running to me when you find yourself penniless.”The mother of Albert Einstein:“When you grow up, you’ll find that sitting around thinking about the nature of time and space won’t pay the grocery bills.” The mother of George W. Bush: “You’ll never be like your dad, who became President of the United States and started his own war.”

  32. The tone (语气)for the writer to write the passage is ________.

  A. serious. B. humorous. C. disapproving(不赞成的). D. critical(批评的).

  33. In paragraph 2, the writer makes a comparison between mothers and fathers to prove that _____.

  A. females love kids more than males

  B. child-rearing is difficult both for females and males

  C. my dad is not interested in child-rearing

  D. males are not good at child-rearing

  34. What does the underlined word “slip-ups” in paragraph 4 probably mean?.

  A. Stories. B. Shortcomings. C. Mistakes. D. Disadvantages.

  35. The last paragraph is mainly developed by __________.

  A. providing different examples B. following the order of space

  C. making comparisons D. analyzing causes

  Dear Li Ming,

I am writing to you because I think I have something really serious to communicate with you.I notice that recently you often go to the Netbar and the Game Centre together with several friends. As your best friend,I am very concerned about you, because sometimes you even do not have classes in order to play. Friends play such an important part in our life that we have to choose our friends carefully. At the same time,we should always remember that true friends will never ask us to do things that will not be good for us.Thus I do not think the friends around you are your true friends and I believe you are smart enough to tell right from wrong.

I hope you will make a wise decision soon.

  Yours,

  Li Hua
